What is your jewellery made out of?
Most of SMITH jewels is made out of sterling silver or gold. We do work with brass and copper on request and semi-precious stones.
How do I wear and care for my SMITH jewellery?
Our beautiful jewellery deserves due care and benefits from regular cleaning and careful handling. Each item of jewellery is accompanied by sturdy box in which it should be stored when not being worn to keep it looking its best.
Stashing ones earrings into a makeup case or handbag, although convenient, is not recommended and can be detrimental to them and the materials used to craft them. Precious metals are soft and impressionable, and bending and snapping will occur with careless treatment. Earring tops and studs should be treated gently and regularly checked that butterflies and fittings sit securely.
Does the jewellery tarnish?
All metals tarnish. Brass and copper are particularly sensitive. Things like oily skin, creams, perfume, water, the acidity of your skin, air, etc. can all affect the metal. Over time, if unworn or stored against other items of jewellery, tarnish will also develop.
How do I clean my jewellery?
Tarnish can occur on sterling silver when it comes in contact with the oxygen in the air. Counterintuitively, the best way to keep your silver from blackening is to touch it and wear it. The oils from your skin add a layer of tarnish resistance. For deep storage, it is best to use an airtight container. If you do see some tarnishing, you can polish it with a jewellery polishing cloth, or if it is very strong we recommend a silver polish.
Care should be taken to keep gold plated jewellery separate from other jewellery as the plating is a surface finish so it can be susceptible to wear, but if looked after correctly signs of wearing should only occur over a long period of time. Avoid wearing gold plated jewellery when swimming or bathing, and remove rings before applying hand cream as the acids in moisturisers can affect the longevity of the plating. Perfumes and hairsprays can also have a negative effect, so apply before putting on gold vermeil jewellery. The dulled look that plated jewellery develops in time is caused by the core layer of metal tarnishing. A gold jewellery dip will bring out its original lustre, followed by a gentle wash in soapy water to remove any residue. We offer a re-plating service for any SMITH jewellery pieces that are in need, the cost is nominal and is based on a combination of weight of the item and surface area that needs re-plating.
Regular cleaning of gemstones will help stones to retain their glamour and shine. With the exception of pearls, emeralds and opals (as these are porous), gently clean your jewellery in warm soapy water and using a soft bristle toothbrush to gently clean the surface and in and behind any stone settings. Avoid harder bristled brushes or new toothbrushes as these can leave scratches on the surface of the metal. Rinse the piece under running water – with the plug in – and use a soft cloth to dry the piece.
Don’t forget to remove your rings when washing up or showering, as soap particles may become lodged in stone settings and crevices. Soaps can also leave a film over stones, creating a dull appearance. Avoid exposure to hot water and/or harsh chemicals and acids (such as household chemicals, perfumes, or hairsprays) as these may erode the finish or cause discolouration.
Pearls are particularly susceptible to damage from chemicals such as make-up and hair spray, so your pearl jewellery should generally be the last thing you put on when getting dressed, and the first thing you take off when undressing. Wipe your pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth as soon as you take them off. The cloth can be dampened with water, or it can be dry. If damp, allow the pearls to air dry before putting them away. Pearls must never be put in an ultrasonic cleaning machine, or be cleaned with ammonia or harsh detergents. Don’t store your pearls with other jewellery because they can easily be scratched when metal or gemstones rub against them – store them in the cloth pouch that they originally came in and find a special section in your jewellery box for them.
Do you do custom orders?
Of course we do. Just contact us with what you have in mind and I will send you a quote. We prefer to meet with our clients when creating a commission. This allows us to have a better understanding of you, or you as a couple and the kind of jewellery that will suite your needs. Please send an email to email@example.com with the following information below.
- An image or idea of what you are wanting to have created
- The ring size (if you have it)
- The type of stone you are wanting, if any
- Your budget
Please also send us a time and day that will suit you best for the consultation. If we feel that your commission suits our design aesthetic, we will confirm a consultation time with you via email.
Do you ship locally or internationally?
All jewels are posted through the SA Post Office, counter to counter, and can take up to 2 weeks (but in most cases 5 working days or less) to be delivered once ordered and paid for. However, items being posted to an address outside of South Africa may take a little longer.
Once your order has been posted, you will be contacted with a tracking number. You can then track your purchase via the post office website www.sapo.co.za or by calling the post office call center 0860 111 502. When you collect your parcel, remember to bring the tracking number and your ID book with you to the post office. Please ensure that you give your correct postal address.
If you prefer having your items shipped a little faster, please click the Speed Services option when checking out. This option means your package will be posted the day after purchase and will arrive at your door the next day between 9am-12pm, i.e. two working days for local deliveries. For international Speed Services it will take up to 5 working days to get to you after postage.
What is your Returns Policy?
All jewels are under a one year warranty but only if it is obvious that the purchaser has not damaged the jewel in any way. If an item requires repair, and is still under warranty, we will repair and return it at no extra cost. Out of warranty items can be sent to us for a small repair cost, postage not included.
How do I pay?
We use a secure payments system called Payfast and Paypal. Both accepts credit cards and Payfast also has an EFT option.
How long does a commission take to make?
The time frame for completing the commission depends on the amount of work we have at the time. Usually once the quote has been sent and accepted and the stone has been sourced, we will need 2 to 3 weeks for manufacturing.
Do you work in gold, platinum or any other metals?
Yes, we design and work in all semi-precious and precious metals.
